Siren Song adapts themes of transformation, communication, and desire from other mermaid folklore and expresses them as never before. Through the form of Dancinema, we see Dance’s transformation when met with cinematic machines parallel to Ondine’s experience coming to land and meeting a Human Artist. From Anderson’s tale, the desire for a soul and some afterlife parallels the way the ephemeral nature of the art of live performance changes when it is recorded. Ondine and the Human Artist represent two creatures of different realms who are drawn to discover each other. Communicating with their arts and senses, in spite of contrasting natures they are able to bond, but Ondine is different from the Human Artist in critical ways…

A siren song echoes and we sing different tonguesYou of moon and sea and I of earth and sunNonlexical but not nonsensical, I watch you speakand it makes me feelThat’s why I think this love is realUnderstanding in another waywhile keeping doubting demons at baySteer your helm to my realmDispell your shellOur natures are different and I can’t decideif you’re what will kill me or make me thriveNot part of my world and not meant to tryBut my heart knows no shame and you’ve never been shyShould you stay with your kind and I with mine?Take this token to remember me byFor memories stay til they wash awaybut time tells how these accumulateUndulating pleasure and painYou shape the landscapeCarve the facewith waves that breakthe way I am with how you feelNothing can save me nowI’m drowning in the swellSteer your helm to my realm

Intrigued and could be if balanced but impossible if not stoppable once I’ve had too much
A siren song you knew all alongthat stirred the soul after it was goneLaughter can’t dispel the hell of its silencethere is no peace, this stillness is violent

A siren song echoes and we sing different tongues
You of moon and sea and I of earth and sun
Nonlexical but not nonsensical, I watch you speak
and it makes me feel
That’s why I think this love is real

Understanding in another way
while keeping doubting demons at bay
Steer your helm to my realm
Dispell your shell

Our natures are different and I can’t decide
if you’re what will kill me or make me thrive
Not part of my world and not meant to try
But my heart knows no shame and you’ve never been shy

Should you stay with your kind and I with mine?
Take this token to remember me by
For memories stay til they wash away
but time tells how these accumulate

Undulating pleasure and pain
You shape the landscape
Carve the face
with waves that break
the way I am with how you feel

Nothing can save me now
I’m drowning in the swell
Steer your helm to my realm

Intrigued and could be if balanced but
impossible if not stoppable once I’ve had too much

A siren song you knew all along
that stirred the soul after it was gone
Laughter can’t dispel the hell of its silence
there is no peace, this stillness is violent

Thank you so much to everyone who watched GREY MATTER yesterday and gave your opinions and feedback. It was great to have a test audience as I have been trying so hard for 6 months since its completion to keep the video secret! I will be submitting to the Vancouver Short Film Festival as well as Dancefilm Festivals. Currently it is in the Dance Camera West Archives in LA serving as an example of this emerging art form made right here in the 604!

SIREN SONG is currently in the final stages of production and I will be releasing a teaser fairly soon. Immerse yourself in the story and symbols of the still images and writings until then and please do engage with it! Making the art is the “how” part of it - communicating it is the “why.”

Other exciting news: Work is underway on MORE projects but they are top secret (for now!)

Please share this page if you like what you’re seeing/reading! I’m applying to festivals and for many other things so if there is indeed an engaged audience it would be great for the page to reflect that.

Supporting Dancinema is not just supporting me but supporting MANY local artists. One of my principal motivations and interests is bringing together multiple creative people in these directed projects to showcase their talents as well.

Thank you to all of those who made GREY MATTER what it is!

Chersea Music for your inspirational music
Newman Productions for your great creativity and still from cinematography to editing
Hayley, Courtney, and Sam for being wonderful dance collaborators and trusting me!
And Essence of Dance inc. for providing the interior space and most of our dance training.

SO excited to continue these projects!
